Happy Earth Day

On April 22nd, Earth Day is celebrated and this year marks 50 years of this special event.

Earth Day's mission is to educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide. The theme for this year's Earth Day 2020 is climate action. In the Junior school, pupils have been showing their support for Earth Day by making a sign or poster at home.

This is the simplest form of action and hopefully their work might inspire others to find out more information about Earth Day. In addition, in Zoom sessions, our Junior pupils have been learning about climate change and taking part in Kahoot quizzes, as well as showing their support for Earth Day by wearing green and blue. In KS1, the children have also been planting seeds and growing their own vegetables.

Furthermore, in Year 1, they have been learning about natural and man made sources of light. They used Van Gogh’s “Starry night” painting, in order to think about and appreciate the stars at night. They talked about light pollution and using less electricity by switching off our lights.

Both Senior and KS2 pupils can also take part in a global virtual event - 'Earth Day Art Make-in' in connection with the support that is being shown in the UK for NHS heroes, by placing drawings of rainbows in the windows of their homes. The Senior school pupils have also shown their support for Earth Day, by taking part in some House Challenges.

They will have the opportunity to take part in a quiz from one of our Year 10 Eco-Schools team members, Ralina. In addition, Senior pupils can create a garment or accessory for a 'Virtual Trash Fashion Show'.
