Mark Smith

Headmaster at Haileybury Astana
After graduating in economics from Lancaster University, England, Mark has spent over 30 years teaching in some of England’s most prestigious independent schools.

After a brief spell teaching at Heath Mount School (which is a feeder school for Haileybury UK), he taught Economics and Business Studies at Millfield School where he was also a housemaster and head of year. He was then deputy head of Caldicott School (one of the main feeder schools for Eton College) before becoming headmaster of Northcote Lodge School (which feeds some of the leading UK schools including Eton College and Harrow School).
He is an Independent School Inspector and has worked as a consultant in International Schools in Qatar, China and Malaysia.

Mark is passionate about the importance of educating the whole child and is a strong advocate of the importance of music, drama, art and sport in the curriculum. He has coached a number of sports to a high level.

Kim Holmes, Head of Senior School

Kim Holmes

Head of Senior School
Kim Holmes is from Oxford, UK and has studied at 3 Universities. Kim’s first degree is Bachelor of Science in Management and Sports Science from Loughborough, the top sports University in England. Kim has a PGCE from Exeter University plus a Masters degree from Birmingham UK in Educational Management. Kim has completed courses at the Principal Training College.
Her working career has taken her to Africa, Mexico and Kazakhstan. She has held senior management positions in top international schools for almost two decades and is proud to be our Deputy Head of School.

Georgios Mesazos, Deputy Head of Senior School

Georgios Mesazos

Deputy Head of Senior School
Originally from Corfu, Georgios acquired his BEd on German Language and Literature at the Aristotle University and following his Master of Education, he was awarded a Specialization Diploma on Management of Multiculturalism and Teaching Practices from the National and Kapodistrian University in Athens. Georgios joined Haileybury Astana in August 2017 coming from Dubai where he was the Dean of Studies at a large International School. Georgios is working together with pupils, parents and colleagues to enhance our students’ learning experience.

Jane  Knight, Head of Junior School

Jane Knight

Head of Junior School
Jane Knight is an experienced Primary head teacher and principal with over 13 years’ experience providing the vision and leadership to ensure the high quality of education for all pupils. Before joining Haileybury Astana in 2016 she had worked as a principal in SAFA International school in Dubai. She believes that the culture and ethos of a school are instrumental in its development over time and link directly with the curriculum, teaching methodology and the overall attainment and progress of each and every student.

Andrew Watkins, Deputy Head of Junior School

Andrew trained at Durham University (UK), completing a 4year degree, achieving a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Primary Education. This is his seventh year working at Haileybury Astana with experience working and leading in both Key Stages.

Aizhan Baizhanova, Bursar

Aizhan Baizhanova

Aizhan graduated from Almaty Academy of Economics and Statistics, was a manager at a global power company, and has 19 years of experience as a finance controller. She was a part of the of Haileybury Astana founding team, and is responsible for the building, infrastructure and financial health of the school. Aizhan is dedicated to safeguarding the School's clear financial, legal and logistic policies.
