We are delighted to announce that the Haileybury Almaty Class of 2018 have been rewarded with offers to study at some of the world’s leading universities for next year. Covering a wide range of academic disciplines these achievements continue to demonstrate the school’s level of academic excellence and the subject breath which we offer within our Sixth Form Curriculum.
Utilising the various components of the Haileybury Habits, our students have shown their determination and resilience to succeed in the highly competitive global universities marketplace. Supported by our experienced teachers and guided on the universities application procedure, these offers demonstrate just how far rigorous academics and a rich and supportive school life can take a student, regardless of their background. They have been now been able to achieve their goal in the next step in their career development under the carefully guidance of our staff and we wish them well in the future.
Dariya Baimagambetova, our Head Girl and a Haileybury student of 5 years, has been accepted to two Ivy League universities, Brown University and the University of Pennsylvania. Her first choice is to study economics and accounting at the University of Pennsylvania’s prestigious Wharton School. Dariya’s great success extended to the UK as well, as she earned places at top Russell Group universities, including the University of Exeter, the University of Manchester, and the University of Warwick. Dariya, a talented singer, also earned a coveted place at Yale-NUS University in Singapore.
Another Haileybury Almaty student and an accomplished pianist and composer, Aishabibi Ashimbekova, was also admitted to Yale-NUS with a full scholarship, and was among the top 8% of thousands of international applicants who were admitted to the University of California at Berkeley, the world’s best public university. Aishabibi plans to study astrophysics, building upon a stellar academic career that began at Haileybury Almaty in 2012, when she won a scholarship to attend.
Winning merit and need-based scholarships are important signs of a university’s interest in applicants, and our success stories reflect our students’ international outlook and resourcefulness.
Our Head Boy, Volodymyr Kyselov, in addition to being accepted to top UK engineering programmes at Imperial College, UCL, and King’s College, London won a highly competitive US$25,000 per year merit scholarship to NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering in NYC.
Dinmukhamed Mailibay, an excellent computer scientist, was also accepted to UCL and King’s College, London and won a place at KAIST in Korea with a full scholarship.
Smat Baitileuov, meanwhile, excelled in both academics and co-curricular activities and was awarded a full scholarship to study economics at Bocconi University in Milan, Italy.
Another economics student, Alooa Iralina, was an incredibly energetic participant in athletic and musical activities at Haileybury, and she was awarded a merit scholarship of US$30,000 per year from Millsaps College, a private liberal arts college in the US.
Reflecting a diversity of interests, our student Alen Li is preparing to study music at the California Institute of the Arts next year, and Sofiya Arpaci, one of our most talented artists, was accepted to study Interior Design at Parsons School of Art and Design in New York. Parsons is one of the most prestigious design universities in the world, and Sofiya also put in a strong performance in applying to the UK, with offers from Leeds Arts University, Plymouth University, and others.
Canada was a popular choice for students pursuing several disciplines: Tamila Issabekova was accepted to the University of Toronto and plans to study marketing, Dana Abylgazina was accepted to the University of British Columbia to study international relations and urban studies, and Anna Rakhilkina is currently awaiting decisions from art universities Emily Carr University of Art and OCAD University.
What unites Haileybury students is that they gain a holistic and vibrant education, based on the values of the British Independent education system, which is truly unique in quality in Kazakhstan.
It once again highlights the message given by Ivy league Admissions departments; that our Haileybury students who apply to the top universities in the world from within Kazakhstan enjoy greater success than their Kazakh counterparts who make the same applications from the UK or the USA.
It is therefore no surprise that success was widespread this year at Haileybury Almaty – students also earned places at excellent universities across the world. These include top Russell Group universities in the UK, including Imperial College, University College London, and King’s College London. Acceptances also came from Canada’s University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia, and universities like Bocconi University in Milan, Italy and KAIST in Korea offered student full scholarships. In the US, numerous universities including New York University, Parsons School of Art and Design, the California Institute of the Arts, Millsaps College, and Drexel University awarded students significant merit scholarships ranging from US$5,000 to US$30,000 per year.
