English Olympiad Results

Saturday 21st May brought the inaugural English Olympiad here at Haileybury Astana. Students went through the selection process in advance, writing a piece linked to our school motto, “Sur Sum Corda” and exploring the elements of life which brought joy and meaning to them.

Eighteen young people came along to compete in order to gain placement and to win the trophy. The competition consisted of two elements: Creative Writing in which the students chose a task out of eight proposed and a Spoken Word Performance poem section. For the writing piece, they could describe a perfect day; a dream room in their future home or tell a story which could be linked to a given title or scenario. The poems performed included: Poe; Wordsworth; Shakespeare and Yeats. Students used tone, pace, intonation and gesture to draw out the meaning of their chosen work.

We were delighted to host this wonderful group of cheerful, brave and risk-taking students and it was a joy to announce the winners:

  • 1st Place – Yelkhan Zhappas – Excel High School
  • 2nd Place – Zarina Sagynayeva – Spectrum International School
  • 3rd Place – Tanya Bychkova – School No. 3

Many thanks to all those who entered the competition and brought pride to themselves, their families and their school.

The English Olympiad was a fun and exhilarating challenge that served as a bridge between Haileybury Astana and various schools in Nur-Sultan. We were excited to welcome bright young learners from different schools.
